2023 Dubs Cohort
Due to COVID-19, schools were closed in 2020. Throughout that period as a learner from a rural area, had no access to wifi and internet data is expensive, my mother did not afford. As a result attending Zoom classes was not possible. One of days I heard about Dubs Maths WhatsApp tutroring on uMhlobo Wenene Fm in March 2020 during lockdown.
I joined immediately using my mother's phone. I was still doing Grade 11., I was not doing that well in maths but when schools reopened, the work was revision because at Dubs they taught me. As a result, my marks improved from 51% to 80%. To express my gratitude, I am now tutoring Maths at Dubs Maths

WhatsApp Tutoring

Our Innovative Solution
During the level 5 lockdown in we started a Quarantine E-Learning WhatsApp group, this allowed us to reach over 167 learners from four provinces in South Africa. Furthermore, we have used WhatsApp creatively to host career expos, inviting professionals from various fields to engage with learners and provide insights into their careers. To date WhatsApp is still our best tool for bridging the gap in education
Why WhatsApp?
1. Affordable
Mobile networks offer WhatsApp-only or social media data bundles, which are on average 57% cheaper than regular all-purpose data. 1 GB bundle for 30 days: R34 (normal data) vs R79 (WhatsApp data only). This makes online learning more accessible to students from disadvantaged backgrounds
2. Data Friendly
WhatsApp uses significantly less data compared to video conferencing apps or other e-learning platforms. This allows students to access educational content, send queries, and receive feedback without worrying about high data costs
3. Easily Accessible
Dub’s Maths hosted the world's first Career Expo on WhatsApp, providing learners with free access to industry professionals from diverse fields, including medicine, engineering, law, media, marketing, and technology. The expo was completely cost-free for learners, as:
No travel or meal expenses were required.
Industry experts engaged with students from the comfort of their homes
Learners could interact with 48 guests via WhatsApp using only a smartphone and affordable data bundles (approx. 2GB).
Students without data could still access chat history and catch up later.
Our innovative approach ensured that even learners from disadvantaged and rural areas could gain valuable career insights without financial barriers.
Innovation: Career Expo on WhatsApp
WhatsApp is one of the most widely used apps in South Africa, meaning most students are already familiar with it. It works on both smartphones and basic mobile devices, ensuring that students can learn anytime and anywhere without needing expensive equipment. Additionally, our use of WhatsApp has enabled us to reach learners in rural areas, where access to traditional e-learning platforms is often limited due to poor infrastructure and high costs.
